Engineers Week Is Just Days Away Engineers Week Is Just Days Away Engineers Week Is Just Days Away This year, Engineers Week is celebrating its 65th anniversary with a full slate of programs intended promote the impact of engineers on society, encourage public dialogue about the need for engineers, and introduce children, educators and parents to the exciting world of engineering. Engineers Make a World of Difference is the theme of the weeklong celebration, which is organized by DiscoverE and will take place from Feb. 21 to 27.Engineers Week 2016 will encompass a variety of activities including the Future City Competition Finals, Global Day of the Engineer, Girl Day, Family Day, and the announcement of the New Faces of Engineering nominees. Not content to limit the festivities to a single week, DiscoverE will continue the celebration of engineering with the Global Marathon, a three-day virtual conference for women in engineering and technology that will take place in March . Engineers Week 2016 is co-chaired by Boeing, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and SAE International.This years celebration will begin before the official start of Engineers Week with the Future City Competition National Finals, from Feb. 13 to 16 at the Capital Hilton in Washington D.C. The competition asks middle-school students to envision, design, and build cities of the future. The winners of the programs dezentral competitions advance to the Future Cities National Finals, where they compete for prizes - including a trip to the U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala. - and a variety of other special awards, including the Best Futuristic City Award from ASME. Global Day of the Engineer, which is new this year, aims to bring together the international community to celebrate the accomplishments of engineers, give students from the world a chance to experience engineering, and sha re the remarkable innovations engineers create on a daily basis. Girl Day, on Feb. 25, will encompass a number of different events throughout the United States that will provide female engineers and engineering students with the opportunity to serve as a role model and inspire girls to pursue careers in engineering. Special Girl Day workshops, lab tours, online discussions, and hands-on projects at companies and universities scheduled that day will give young women the chance to experience the excitement of engineering and learn about the profess ion from the women who work in it each day. The annual Discover Engineering Family Day in Washington D.C., to be held this year on Feb. 27, will feature approximately 30 companies, societies, universities and other exhibitors presenting hands-on activities exploring basic science and engineering principles. ASMEs Washington D.C. Section will be one of the exhibitors at the event, which is expected to draw thousands of students, teachers and parents to the National Building Museum. Another regular feature of Engineers Week is the announcement of the finalists for the Professional and College Editions of DiscoverEs New Faces of Engineering program. New Faces-Professional Edition highlights the innovative work of early career engineers up to the age of 30 and their impact on society, while New Faces-College Edition recognizes engineering students for their successes both inside and outside of the classroom. ASMEs three candidates for each of the New Faces categories will be announced in the next issue of ASME News. The official winners in each category will be announced by DiscoverE on April 4. The spirit of Engineers Week will continue into March, with the 2016 Global Marathon - a free, online event for women in engineering and technology throughout the world. The Global Marathon, to be held March 8-10, will consist of three days of live webcasts and local, in-person events focusing on a daily theme. Day 1 will concentrate on the theme Around the World Women Engineering Humanitarian Solutions. The second day of the marathon will address the topic Reach Up Advancement and Leadership, while the last day will be dedicated to the theme Reach Back Activism Through Volunte erism.
